Election spreads redesign

Upon request of my advisor, publishing representative and Editor-in-Chief, I was asked to redesign the Election spreads. They felt the spreads did not flow with the style of the rest of the book. Kara, the former Assistant Design Director, put a lot of time and effort into creating the pages she did, so the spreads essentially required a repackaging of content -- which evolved into an entirely different spread altogether.

As you can see, I redid the Obama illustration to ensure he was looking inward on the spread's content. Also, I decided to create the Obama illustration out of stars in order to have a stars and stripes (Americana) theme to connect the two spreads. The decision to turn the students into black and white images came out of a desire to make them more uniform so as not to compete with all the other elements on the spread. Adding the "I am" statements corresponds to the written aspect of this yearbook's theme.

The Election pages needed to be redesigned, so I took this task upon myself. Above is the dominant illustration for the first spread, which is focusing on the candidates and issues. The following spread will focus on the student perspective.

The Cover

Very exciting. I have finished the cover design for the 2009 Ibis. There is a slight lime green stroke around the "IAM" of "MIAMI" because our theme for this book is "I AM ... MIAMI".

Emma's Birthday Present

Poster I designed and illustrated in Illustrator for my friend Emma's birthday present. Emma is a brilliant artist and designer, so I wanted to create her something she'd really appreciate on numerous levels. I was initially nervous about this concept because I wasn't sure how successful it was going to be. I'm glad I saw it through, though, because it's a truly unique piece.

Edge Cover - Two Plays

The deadline for this Edge cover was an interesting one because I was left to my own devices for the most part. I usually do a bit of my own research as a means of generating ideas while I'm sketching concepts, but I also read and rely on the accompanying story. In this instance, the story was the last thing added to the page because the writer severely missed the deadline. After being informed of the two plays, I did quite a bit of research and discovered a common link between the two stories' plots - Americana. The American flag bleeds into the roots of the tree. Illustrated in Illustrator.

Edge Cover

Edge Cover - Grammy's

My first Edge cover for the Miami Hurricane. The story was about the Grammy's and featured two writers' projected winners and thoughts on the artist or album. Celebrating its 50th anniversary, the illustration was inspired by one of the corporate logos. All of the elements were drawn using Illustrator, and were inspired by a few free fonts.

80 Memories of the Orange Bowl

The infamous "Orange Bowl spread," as it was known in the office while I worked on it. Taking me over a month to complete, I am really proud of this piece, and it's one of my most treasured. The design was inspired by Blueprint (RIP).

Orange Bowl Shirt Competition

Runner-up in a campus-wide shirt design contest. The winner's design was made into 6000 t-shirts and handed out to students for the last home game at the Orange Bowl (RIP) ever.

KKG Shirts

Three shirts I designed, ordered, and distributed for my sorority as the Graphic Merchandise Chairman. The top shirt was for Homecoming; the middle was for bid day; and the last shirt was for recruitment. Our theme for recruitment that year was "House of Blues," since our colors are dark blue and light blue. The recruitment shirt was never distributed and worn because the shirt company kept messing up the order, and the shirt eventually became outdated. Great learning experience, but unfortunate.

Prague Poster

Letter and tabloid size poster I illustrated/designed for the Prague study abroad program. My design was one of several selected to advertise the program.

KKG Semi-Formal Shirt

My first shirt as the Graphic Merchandise Chairperson. The theme for the 2007 semi-formal was old, classic Miami. The left shirt is the front, the right is the back. I wanted to do something different from typical shirts the chapter has ordered in the past; hence, the palm tree in the lower right corner of the back.

Caitlin's Going-Away Gifts

One of the last things I did while attending Philadelphia University were these photo illustrations. Caitlin was my roommate and best friend; she loves the '60's, vintage, and funky earrings. After photographing her in the studio, I used curves in Photoshop to manipulate the colors. These are my favorites. I printed her special huge versions as a going-away gift, since I would be transferring schools.
